Reef & cenote
Pair a barrier-reef morning with a cenote cavern dive in one day.
Tulum is a bucket-list dive destination for one reason: the cenotes. These flooded cave systems open into cathedral-scale caverns where sunlight pours through the surface in solid beams, and where haloclines (the shimmering boundary between fresh and salt water) make the whole scene look out of focus in the best possible way. Dos Ojos, Casa Cenote, The Pit and Angelita are world-famous cavern dives, all within reach of Tulum.
Cavern diving stays within the light zone and the reach of the surface, so it’s accessible to any Open Water–certified diver: no cave certification required for the guided cavern routes. Full cave diving is a separate, technical discipline, and Tulum is also one of the best places on Earth to train for it, with dive shops running everything from Discover Scuba through Cavern and full Cave certification.
Beyond the cenotes, the Mesoamerican reef offshore gives you classic warm-water Caribbean diving (turtles, rays, nurse sharks and healthy coral) in calm, barrier-protected water. Many divers do a reef morning and a cenote afternoon, banking two completely different dives in one day.
We connect you with established, safety-first local dive shops running small guided groups, whether you’re trying scuba for the first time or logging your hundredth cavern dive.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a cave certification for cenote dives?
No. Guided cavern dives stay within the light zone and near the surface, and are open to any certified Open Water diver. Full cave diving (beyond the light) requires cave certification, which Tulum dive shops also teach.
Can beginners dive in Tulum?
Yes. Dive shops run Discover Scuba experiences for uncertified first-timers (in a cenote or the reef with an instructor) and full PADI Open Water courses. You can start diving here with no prior experience.
What’s the water like?
Cenote water is a constant ~24–25°C and astonishingly clear, often 50m+ visibility. Reef water is warm and calm thanks to the barrier reef. A 3mm wetsuit is typical for cenotes.
Which cenote dive is best?
It depends on your level and taste: Dos Ojos for beginners and light beams, The Pit for depth and haloclines, Angelita for its eerie hydrogen-sulphide cloud, Casa Cenote for an open, relaxed dive. Your dive shop will match a site to your certification and comfort.
